What is leadership...to me
Leadership can mean a lot of different things, and like in class we went over what some of those characteristics are. But what does leadership actually mean to me? I feel leadership is the one thing that every person has in them, just some of us do not like to take that extra step to put ourselves in front of other people. There are many times when everyone has the chance to step up, but not everyone takes the leap. A leader could also be one without knowing that they are leading others. It might take a little time before some leaders can actually see that they are helping others and leading others. I personally feel that I am a leader, but a quite leader. What I mean a quite leader is that I don't like to put myself out in the open all the time, but if I feel like something needs to be said and noone else is putting forth effort then I will stick my neck out on the line. If everyone would feel like they are a leader then there could be situations that may have never had happened. I was wondering if there were others who felt like they were leaders, would much of our history still be the same?

You made some interesting points. A leader to me is someone who takes initiative and is able to delegate roles in an effective manner. As you stated, I think each of us have a bit of leadership characteristics within us. The realm of leadership is dependent upon the subject brought forth. I am more apt to stepping up to the plate in group projects to insure that each portion of the project is completed in an timely and effective manner. I too am a quiet individual, but when I see that there is something to be worked on...I jump into it full force. I think that effective leaders do not have to be extroverted, successful people maybe quiet but effective in the way which they lead others.
ReplyDeleteI think that everyone has a leader deep in them somewhere. The difference is whether or not they actually put forth the effort to try to lead a group of people. I agree with you about being a quiet leader. I am not a person that jumps out there, unless it is something like making sure that everyone has their part done for a group project, or something of that nature. I think that this quiet leader is something that seems to be a theme here, and I cannot help but to wonder if quiet leaders are better leaders than leaders that are very outgoing, and willing to put their “neck out on the line” right away.
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing up comments about the fact that some leaders can be quiet, and not on the main "stage". I think that sometimes, the most moving leaders can be those who work quietly, leading others in a steadfast, yet simple manner. Yes, it is important to be able to speak out and lead with a strong voice, yet sometimes, I think our leaders could take a lesson from those who lead by quiet example.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, everyone commenting on this one actually sparked my interest in reading the post. I especially like your take on an almost "naive" leader who doesn't realise that they're in a leadership role. I would agree with you that I know, have worked for, and learned from many individuals who perform the tasks they need to in order to become a role model, or a leader if you will, for individuals working with or for them. I think that it is key to take into consideration that, like you have noted, not all leaders have to be the Steve Jobs of an organization. There will always be a place for a leader who can silently and modestly perform tasks that will, in-turn, inspire others to follow the movements made by that individual.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment that everybody does have the leadership trait somewhere in them but that not everyone puts themselves out there. As a business management major this is a trait that I need to start showing more of. A lot of times I tend to sit back to much and just let things take their course when working on things. Instead of jumping in and taking control I tend to let things happen and sit back and let others make decisions. I don't always need to jump out there and take control, sometimes you do need to be more of a follower, but I feel that in order to accomplish things in life you do need to put yourself out there on the line and really take control of things.
